I always took my home's heating and cooling system for granted. That is until I found myself battling one of the hottest days in years and my air conditioner simply refused to turn on. After contacting my local HVAC contractor, I learned that my cooling coils had frozen over from a lack of maintenance. He did get my AC back up and running that day, but he also helped me to look at my heating and cooling system in a whole new light. I have spent a lot of time over the last few years learning more about how to properly maintain my HVAC system and ultimately lower my energy costs. Today, I would like to share this knowledge with you so that I can help you to avoid some of the costly mistakes I have made in the past.
Your air conditioning system will save you from the hot, humid weather of summer when it is good working order. Maintenance should be done before you need to use your air conditioner every day to avoid emergency repairs. Even if you don't get your system serviced before the hot weather starts, get your air conditioner serviced as soon as you can. When you have your filters changed, the coils and fins cleaned, and your ac checked for efficiency, you have less of a chance of your system breaking down when it is working hard to keep your home cool. While you can use your air conditioner without servicing it, this is never recommended as your system will not be efficient.
Good Maintenance Prolongs the Life of Your Air Conditioner
When you take good care of your air conditioner, it is going to last longer. If you don't change your air filters and don't get your system checked for small problems, you will have a system that struggles to keep your home a cool temperature. As the weather gets more hot, the system is going to strain so much that it will eventually break.
Learn How to do Basic Maintenance
You should understand where the air filters are on your air conditioning system and how to change them. Air filters should be changed every month when you are using your system regularly. Understand that the drain plug can get clogged, causing water to drip in your home. Learn how to clean the plug and put it back into place. If you have ice buildup, turn off the unit and let the ice melt. While this may need further repairs, a first step is to turn off the air conditioner and let the evaporator coil ice melt.
Pay Attention to Small Problems
If you hear strange noises, if your system turns on and off too often, or you notice that your home isn't getting as cool as normal, it's important to point out these problems to an air conditioning service specialist. While the air conditioner may still work, it is going to be working for long. Get small problems fixed before they turn into bigger issues.
When you take good care of your air conditioning system, it's going to take good care of your cooling needs. Stay comfortable, even when the weather is hot by getting your air conditioner serviced every season by a professional.Share
