I always took my home's heating and cooling system for granted. That is until I found myself battling one of the hottest days in years and my air conditioner simply refused to turn on. After contacting my local HVAC contractor, I learned that my cooling coils had frozen over from a lack of maintenance. He did get my AC back up and running that day, but he also helped me to look at my heating and cooling system in a whole new light. I have spent a lot of time over the last few years learning more about how to properly maintain my HVAC system and ultimately lower my energy costs. Today, I would like to share this knowledge with you so that I can help you to avoid some of the costly mistakes I have made in the past.
Heating and cooling systems are often what make a house a home. There is nothing like coming in the home after a long hot day in the sun, and experiencing the relaxing feeling of air conditioning. It is equally and enjoyable to come in from a cold day and experiencing the heat of your furnace. However, it seems that the winter and summer months are the months where your furnace and air conditioning unit break down. This is of course because they are in high usage at these times. It is important to keep them maintained, and here are a few things that you can do to keep your heating and air conditioning systems up and running to full capacity.
Most people do not think about their air ducts unless dust is blowing out of them. When dust starts blowing out of an air duct, you are in big trouble. Over a period of time dust and other debris can get caught in the air duct and block the free air flow through the air duct. When this happens your heating or air conditioning system has to work much harder to get the air through the home. The added strain on the system can cause major problems in the system. You may even notice that your utility bills start to really spike if your air ducts are not clean. You can clean your air ducts yourself about every four months with a vacuum, but it is smart to have your air ducts professionally cleaned every other year.
No matter if you are talking about your furnace or your air conditioning unit, the air filter is a very important part of the system. This keeps dust and other debris from entering the system and causing malfunctions. The good news is that air filters are relatively cheap and easy to install. Check the air filter every six months and if it needs replaced, be prompt about the replacement.
A major air conditioning or furnace problem can be very expensive to fix. Many people find that having a technician come to the home once a year can actually save them money. The technician can catch small problems before they turn into major problems. Once a year have a technician come and look at the furnace and air conditioning unit to ensure that they are working properly and safely.Share
